HAC was formed in Germany in 1873 by Paul Landenberger and Phillipp Lang. The initial company was known as Landenberger & Lang Uhrenfabrik and had the trademark of a steamship with the words 'In God We Trust'. Paul Landenberger, son in law of Erhard Junghans, worked at Junghans for several years before starting up this new company. The company began with the production of clock movements and parts, dials, and cases for all types of clocks. In 1883 they changed their name to Hamburg Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik / Hamburg American Clock Company (HAC) . The famous crossed arrows became their trademark in 1892, at which time the company started producing finished clocks for the export market, particularly for Great Britain and North America. They were involved in the production of Mantel, Longcase, Wall, Ship, Alarm and ‘Ticket clocks’ and specialized industrial clocks, and continued to supply components to the clock industry. The company had 1300 employees by 1910. In 1926 the company went into a cooperative with Junghans and finally merged with Junghans in 1930.
